RAFAEL ON ROIDS. Several news outlets, including The Seattle Times, have reports on the 10-game suspension of Baltimore Oriole First Baseman Rafael Palmeiro for violating Major League Baseball's drug policy. Palmeiro testified positive for steroids. This comes on the heels of his 3,000th career hit (which I witnessed and blogged about, here). It also follows his testimony before a Congressional Committee where he swore he had never, ever, EVER used steroids--"period."

This looks bad, and it IS bad. Palmeiro's likely use of steroids is disappointing in the EXTREME. It will be interesting to see how this will play out for the rest of his career and what it means for his Hall of Fame prospects.

Many people know Palmeiro from the viagara TV commercials he appeared in. In light of the recent revelations about his steroid use, there is irony here: Palmeiro used both a drug that causes erections and a drug that causes shrinkage.

Viagra and Steroids..hmm...I appreciate the description of how they effect a man! ha! I didnt know Steroids did that...crazy. What is with all the stupid Viagra commercials anyways...and Cialis..I mean..hello..what did guys do before these pills came out..seems to me this is just a glorified version of Ecstacy. Crazy people.

Looks like Ryan Franklin got hit with a steroids suspension too. Like we needed more trouble with our pitching.

Thanks for the tip. Geez, that's surprising. It's not as if Franklin was the team's biggest power pitcher. What kind of 'roids was HE on?

Interestingly, Franklin is quoted in a P-I story I saw on-line that the test was flawed...somehow.

Isn't Palmeiro saying that he had no idea he was consuming steroids? Do you think that it is possible that his trainer or whoever handles his nutrition/vitamins stuff was slipping him steroids, and he just didn't know it?

I suppose it's possible. I find it a bit difficult to imagine that Ryan Franklin is taking steroids. They're supposed to be performance enhancing drugs, right?

I think it highly unlikely the Orioles trainer or someone working with or for Palmeiro would secretly slip him some STEROIDS. After all, he's playing for the Baltimore Orioles, not the Communist East German swim team.

ha! yeah, which is why I believe he was taking them and now he is just trying to get himself out of trouble. What ever happened to natural talent?
