REALITY CHECK ON ESC RESEARCH. "Stem Cell Tales of Hope and Hype" is the title of an excellent guest column that I recently came across at The author is Minnesotan Jean Swenson, whom I have had the honor of meeting on a couple of occasions. Jean has worked both as a teacher and as a journalist, and is very adept and able when it comes to focusing upon the main issues in complex matters. I recommend her column to readers.

That was an excellent article. Stem Cell research has become such a huge issue over the last 5 years and I think that she is correct by stating that we have created, in a sense, "a fairy tale" that people can put their hopes in. We may never find a cure for spinal cord injuries, but people need to believe that we can, which is why there are so many advocates for stem cell research.

This is a topic that is so controversial. We do not want to allow scientists to harvest stem cells from embryos, so we attempt to regulate that, but on the same token, we do not want to deny the right for research, with the hopes that this research will lead to cures to all sorts of ailments.

But where does it stop? We start harvesting embryos, what will be our next endeavor?
