IN THE END, DEEP THROAT MYSTERY DOESN'T DELIVER. Greg Piper (via The Smoking Room) encapsulates the sentiment surrounding the recently revealed identity of Watergate-informant Deep Throat:

Worst Revelation Ever.

No kidding. Since I was little I can remember my dad talking about what a big, BIG story it would be when the secret identity of the man who had helped bring down the Nixon White House would be revealed. Its like a lousy letdown ending to a film with a promising start and buildup. Oh well, there's always the next high-drama political scandal...

It was bound to be anti-climactic given that the story had been told and the only thing left unrevealed was the identity of the source.

It is interesting, however, when you realize that Felt was suspected of being the source almost immediately by Nixon himself.

    From Editor & Publisher:

"Nixon asked whether Felt was Catholic. Haldeman told him he was Jewish. 'It could be the Jewish thing. I don't know. It's always a possibility,' Nixon wondered aloud."

Another compelling point to the unmasking of Felt was the loyalty that Woodward showed. It's rather ironic that Vanity Fair exposed the identity of Felt rather than Woodward and the Washington Post.

A good article on this can be found here.

Woodward has written a lengthy article on his early relationship with Felt which was posted today at the WP website:

How Mark Felt Became 'Deep Throat' by Bob Woodward
